"RoboCop: Rogue City Emerges as Surprising Face of Unreal Engine 5 — Offers a Thrilling Gaming Experience"

You know what's kind of disappeared these days? Those in-between, not-so-big, not-so-small games – the “AA” games. Nowadays, it's either the big, blockbuster AAA titles like Starfield, or the surprise indie darlings like Unpacking. It's either a massive production or something made on a shoestring budget. There's not much in the middle anymore.

But there was a time, especially in the 2010s, when AA games were a thing. Think of them as the "direct-to-video" version of video games. Games like NeverDead, where you played as a head for a good chunk of the time, or Rogue Warrior, a game that somehow got Mickey Rourke to voice it and set a record for virtual cuss words.

Now, RoboCop: Rogue City, despite looking way better than those old titles, is very much a AA game. Back in 1995, you'd probably be renting it from Blockbuster. Luckily, it's 2024, and I've been playing the heck out of this surprisingly awesome tie-in to one of the '80s most beloved action films. I got it through the Epic Games Store on my trusty gaming PC, and boy, it's a pleasantly violent surprise.

Even though it's not a big-budget game, it looks stunning. It uses Unreal Engine 5 better than any other game I've seen so far. It throws you right into the metal boots of one of the most iconic movie characters ever – the RoboCop from Paul Verhoeven's legendary action flick. And here's the cool part – they got Peter Weller, the original RoboCop, to voice him. So, you sound like RoboCop, look like RoboCop, and definitely feel like RoboCop.

It keeps throwing enemies at you, and you can throw them back – literally. I've lost count of how many times I've tossed a mohawked baddie in a denim vest through a 20th-floor window.

The Auto 9, RoboCop's iconic gun, is a big reason why the game is so much fun. Shooting goons with that rat-a-tat sensation never gets old. And guess what? The default gun never runs out of ammo.

But it's not just mindless shooting. Teyon, the developer, mixes things up with sandbox-style side missions. You get to play RoboCop, the actual policeman – a tanked-up one, though. These optional tasks reminded me of Papers, Please, oddly enough. It's all about bureaucracy and upholding the "Public’s Trust." You can choose to be strict or cut some slack and boost or tank your in-game reputation.

Whatever kind of bulletproof police officer you decide to be, Rogue City is one of the best-looking games I've played. It runs smoothly on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and on my RTX 4090-powered PC, it's next-level buttery. Despite not having Rockstar Games’ budget, Teyon impressively used advanced Unreal 5 features, making Rogue City look better than Starfield, and it cost way less.

Review scores might be a bit mixed, but I highly recommend giving Rogue City a shot. It's an old-school shooter on cutting-edge tech, and it's often a blast to play. My only gripe? It's left me craving a good single-player Predator game.
